If the soccer fans can have ‘Apres Match’ why can’t us cyclists have our own version now that ‘The Ras’ is over . Here’s what I think it might be like ;

Bill O’Willoughby – Oookkeee doke , there we have it now folks , another fantastic Ras draws to a close . Didn’t the boy Gallagher do well . It’s a long time now since we had such a dramatic display of fantastic team work such as that shown by those An Post boys during the week . I’ll throw it out now to the panel to get their reactions on the past weeks tournament , I mean race .
Eamonn , John , what did ye make of it all ?

Eamonn DunFitzsimons – Well Bill , firstly I’d like to say that I’d like everyone to give a big RTE welcome to the men of the Ras !

Bill – Okee doke Eamonn , but you do know that there are none of the riders here in the studio , don’t you ?

Eamonn – I knoow , I knoow , I’m just speaking metaphysically .

Johnny Stokes – I think that’s metaphorically you mean Eamonn .

Eamonn – Yea , yea metaforeheadly , or whatever . But what I mean is that I want people to welcome these brave , courageous , determined , inspiring young men into their hearts . The pain , the suffering , the agony , the punctures . There all part of what makes this such a great game !

Bill – Okee doke Eamonn , we’re straying a little off subject here now aren’t we . John , what did you think of how the race went ?

John – Well Bill , firstly I’d have to say that it really was a fantastic game . Right from the kick off the way those boys got stuck in and gave it their all really was a display of how the game should be played . When young Cassidy had to be stretchered off the other teams really gave a great illustration of sportsmanship . It was hard luck on the young lad but he’ll be back again pretty quickly and with his talent he could be back in the yellow shirt this day next year .

Eamonn – I agree John . But I have to say that the goal that Power got into Clonmel must have been one of the shots of the game . You’d normally expect a striker like him to wait until he gets into the box to take his shot , but he stole a march on the opposition by taking his shot form outside the square and lobbing it over the keeper .

John – He did Eamonn , that’s true but did you see the way his team mate O’Loughlin came back after hitting the crossbar and having the ball bounce right on the line early in the week to score in the final minute of the game . That was sheer brilliance .

Bill – Yes they were truly great moments during the game but we must hand it to young Gallagher and his team mates . They were strong at the back , strong mid climb and strong up front . What do you think made the difference between them and the rest ?

Eamonn – Well Bill , as John said earlier they recovered quickly from having Cassidy stretchered off , and they had the strength in numbers with Lloyd and DeSchroder  . But the Irish boys like O’Brien and Gallagher raised their game to another level . Young Gallagher has been there or there abouts for a few seasons now and really seems to be after settling into the team . With this win under his belt it will be interesting to see what else he may be capable off .

John – That’s true Eamonn , but lets not forget the part that tactics played . The manager Bogaerts played a blinder but I noticed he was on the phone quiet a bit during the game .  I’m just guessing here but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he was discussing tactics with team owner , Kelly . The way the team worked together and brought the game to everyone else was true Tour de France or World cup final  level .

Eamonn – I’ d say your right on the money there John . There was a mark of genius the way they attacked the opposition . Should be interesting to see how the whole team progresses from here .

Bill – Okee doke , well there we have it , all over for another year . I’d like to thank John and Eamonn for their insights as usual and look forward to seeing you all again soon . Don’t forget our highlights programme over on network two at seven pm tonight . Bye for now !

Today ‘The Ras’ blasted into Clonmel and ‘The power fella’ himself , Ciaran Power stormed to a very impressive victory . The town was packed and the atmosphere electric as the pink and blue Pezula kit came into view and we all knew that ‘ one of the lads’ was going to win the stage .

The picture below shows Martin O’Loughlin willing Ciaran on to the line whilst John Fogarty salutes his efforts .

Tomorrow should be full of drama as both Ciaran in third and Dave McCann in fourth overall are both previous winners and should give it everything to wrestle the yellow from ploughman cravens’ Simon Richardson . Lets all be impartial and keep our finger’s crossed for Ciaran to take the jersey !

When you work in a bike shop no two days are ever the same . Different people and different bikes are in and out every day . Also because it’s our own business there’s everything else that goes along with being self employed , accounts , orders , marketing etc. Whilst I’m not one for posting entries in diary form ala Bridget Jones the past week probably should be broken down that way so here it goes ;

Monday – Worked from home all day , did blog post and Vat return . Spent the evening congratulating three year old daughter on doing her poo in the potty . A very momentous event if you’ve ever gone through the toilet training process .

Tuesday – Very busy day in shop . Built two Kuota Kebels with Ultegra SL . Lovely bikes . Hybrids were going like hot cakes as the summer sun takes effect and encourages people to get out and enjoy the long evenings .

Wednesday – Spent half the morning trying to get the back wheel off of a museum piece with a pre sturmey archer 3 speed . The faded Bill Purcell sticker on the down tube said it all . There once was a bike shop in Clonmel , down where the veterinary surgery across from the army barracks currently resides which was owned and operated by Bill Purcell . This was back in the days shortly after Oliver Cromwell laid siege upon the town and this particular bike may well have been used by Cromwell himself .

Thursday – Gave a presentation at the Irish Internet Association’s annual congress . Pretty nerve racking beforehand especially when I sat down on the stage and looked down at around 400 people . I was third up and luckily the preparation beforehand paid off and all went well . Got some very positive feedback afterwards and really , looking back now it couldn’t have gone better . Darragh Doyle even gave it a mention on his blog . Learned a lot from the other speakers also and have plenty of ideas to keep me occupied for the next twelve months .

Friday – National Mountain Bike Day , or so it seemed . Today everyone wanted to head off road . Ballyhoura really seems to be capturing the imagination and getting people to try their hand at a bit of mountain biking .

Saturday – It was like being in the West county hotel ( sign on hotel for the Ras ) all day as  The Men of the Ras were in getting a few final requirements . When your not riding this year and everyone is coming in talking about it there is always that pang of ‘ shoulda trained for it ‘ especially this year with Fridays stage finishing about 300 meters from the shop . If the weather stays good for the week it will be even more difficult to reconcile but if it lashes rain for a day or two the regret of not riding will be significantly diminished .

At home on Saturday evening requests for a pink trampoline were being voiced with increasing regularity as all poos are now finding their way to the potty and a reward was promised , so if anyone knows where to get a pink trampoline please let me know as three year olds are like elephants , they never forget .

The main road between Carrick on Suir and Clonmel is probably the most heavily populated cyclists route on a Sunday morning in Ireland . For well over thirty years now any Belgian or French holiday maker would have felt right at home should they travel this stretch of road between nine and ten AM on any given Sunday . There is , of course more than one group or ‘gang’ of riders and over time a natural selection process has occurred .

The ‘racing’ gang has gone through a number of phases .  Back in the days of the ICF and the NCA there were two racing groups , Cidona and Carrick Wheelers . But just as the Good Friday Agreement calmed the mood up North , a similar atmosphere of peace and reconciliation decended upon the racing cyclists of Carrick as two became one . The ‘Tony Ryan’ group as it became known catered for all racing , former racing and wannabe racing cyclists around Carrick and Clonmel . At 8.59.15 AM each Sunday morning Tony would roll out of his back gate on O’Mahony avenue and pass by the old ESB offices at 9.00.00 AM and everyone present would fall in behind in a tightly packed two abreast manner . The tempo would always be steady -hard and you were always sure of a good workout . ‘Ryaner’ would always know where the group should in order to ensure a 3.05.00 60 mile lap of Ballymac . Unfortunatly Tony now trains less and does his own 1.30 min spin on Sunday mornings so the gang can sometimes be left a little rudderless .

At the same time as Tonys gang was at its peak another gang formed to cater for the more leisurely cyclists .  Jim O’Keefe formed Carrrick Touring Club and here the pace was a little more sedate and it was an easier way into the sport for beginners . It even became a feeder group for riders who wished to progress up to the more intense pace of Tonys group and many are still there today such as Vinny Cronin and Theo English . As time has passed Jim’s group now contains as many Hybrids as Road bikes but the consistency of numbers is still there with at least ten to twelve out each Sunday morning .

The ‘racing’ gang can fluctuate wildly with sometimes eighty riders on the road in mid-january to perhaps just eight or ten at this time of year . This fluctuation is due to a number of factors . Mid-winter all of the racers are present and correct as is the big man Kelly himself . The wannabe racers see this as their season and their chance to beat Kenneally , Clarky or even Kelly into Carrick and so are there in force . Pre-Ras everyone races every Sunday and there are plenty of local races to choose from so numbers go well down . Then as the summer progresses races are further afield , the peak of the season ( Ras time ) has passed and the group begins to enlarge once more .

The pace , however , of both groups would always see the racing gang travelling at least two to three mph faster than the touring group , or so it was until yesterday .

Passing Barlo’s garage the noise level increased slightly and without looking around all of the riders in the ‘Racing’ gang knew that the group had quickly doubled in size . Just as approaching thunder can be felt in the air each rider knew immediately that another group had caught up to them . The nervous glint in one or two eyes betrayed what they thought and feared . In a split second calculations were made . What other group would be on this road today ? could it possibly be the touring group that had caught the racing group ?

All of their fears were confirmed as seventy three year old Jim O’Keefe confidently rode up along the outside of the group on his paganini carbon hybrid to the head of affairs . George Bush once spoke of ‘Shock and Awe’ and this is exactly what was felt as Iraqi suicide bomb brigades would have found  willing volunteers for a few brief moments among the so called racers . Luckily Ryaner was off in the other direction heading between Faugheen and Piltown at the time and was not there to see it .

By the time both gangs reached the far side of Clonmel two miles later normal service had resumed and valuable non dilly dallying lessons had been learned by all racers present . There was some speculation that perhaps a double agent may have been the cause of what happened as Theo had spent quite a bit of time at the front of the group and he had begun his career in the touring gang although this was later discounted .

The day , however , belonged to Jim O’Keefe and his band of merry touring men who have now earned at least five years of bragging rights over the ‘racing ‘ gang .

Have you ever watched one of those carlsberg ads on T.V. and wondered what it would be like if ‘carlsberg did cycling ‘ . I have and here’s what I’ve come up with ;

You are awoken from a peace full nights very comfortable slumber by a member of the Brazilian national ladies cycling team wearing the new Assos Fi Mille cycling shorts carrying a tray of freshly handpicked fruit and a basket of warm freshly baked pastries into your huge bedroom . The aroma of the freshly ‘Gaggia’ brewed Kenyan coffee helps to heighten your senses as you focus on consuming the delicacies before you .

You turn to find your Assos cycling gear all laid out neatly beside you and look out the window to see a clear blue sky with  a shimmering sun and decide on the Fi13 shorts and SS.13 jersey .

As you head out the door you happen upon a shining brand new Pinarello Prince with a pair of DT Swiss 1250′s beneath . You climb aboard and find that the road seems to consistently slope downwards and that the gentle breeze seems to be always on your back .

There are no cars on the road and the only vehicles are tractors towing clear glass trailers at speeds of 40 kmph , for when you may need a break .

You are beginning to feel a little sceptical until a loud bang signalling a blowout of your rear tyre confirms your suspicions that it was too good to be true . A small button on the one piece Pro Stealth white carbon bars that you hadn’t noticed before begins to flash red and you press it instinctivly . Before you can even bring the bike to a halt you feel the rear tyre re-inflating and your all set to go again .

As you cruise on down the smooth tarmac along a winding coast road you look down at your Garmin edge 705 to see that you have covered 150k in just over three hours and feel remarkably fresh as you head down the drive way home , which you had headed down on the way out also .

As you unclip from the prince you are approached by another member of the Brazillian Ladies cycling team who offers to take your bike and wash it for you just as another of her team-mates comes out to tell you that she is ready for your massage . You fall into a relaxed sleep on the massage table and are only awoken by the familiar shrill sound of your own alarm clock . You open your eyes to find that you are back in your own bedroom and can hear the rain pelting against the window .

As you lay there thinking about your perfect days cycling you get an uncomfortable sense that if everyday were a Carlsberg day you might get a little bored . Without the crappy rainy day you wouldn’t appreciate the great sunny days and if you never suffered on a bike how would ever get that sense of satisfaction that comes on the day that all of the training pays of and you float along .
